Guest Design Team member Michelle Curran aka “Chef Mitchie” has used several animal moulds from the Sugar Buttons Collection to create this adorable toy hamper cake topper which would be perfect for a baby shower, christening or birthday party!
Mitchie is a cake and sugar artist based in Las Vegas and her career in cake artistry has led her to compete locally/nationally and on Food Network. Chef Mitchie travels the country working with top cake supply vendors, performs product demos teaching the art of cake decorating, and judging food/cake competitions. When not travelling, she can be found creating custom edible art for her high profile list of clients inside her Las Vegas studio, Mitchies Munchies.
She brings 25+ years of experience to her guest role on the Katy Sue Cake Design Team, and she says, “I really enjoy Katy Sue Designs for several reasons. The products are beautifully crafted, do not breakdown, and to have access to so many creative choices you can’t fail on making an amazing cake design. Sometimes I receive last-minute orders and need to be able to make elements on the fly. Katy Sue Designs molds are definitely a time saver.”
She has created this super cute toy hamper cake topper that we just had to share on our blog! All of the animals are made from moulds from our Sugar Buttons Collection with Kathryn Sturrock.
Mitchie prepared the animals by compressing fondant into push moulds. "Some moulds have individual cavities for various parts (I.e. fur/texture, hair, tail, etc.) and placing individual fondant colours will give a clean/uniform look," says Mitchie.
For Mitchie’s giraffe, she wanted it to look more like a rustic plastic toy. After de-moulding she attached eyes (made with black fondant) and brushed off excess dusting powder. Then she hydrated a bit of chocolate brown petal dust with lemon extract to form a thin paint. After painting each “spot”, Mitchie used an edible food pen to paint hooves and ossicones (the little nubbies atop a giraffes head).
Mitchie then created each of the other Sugar Buttons animals that she wanted to include by using our moulds and fondant. She then added detail with a dry brush with pink petal dust to blush cheeks and other features, before arranging them.
